Instructing

There are four grades of flying instructor in NZ.

  • The A-category qualification is the highest and A-cat instructors are quite rare.
  • A B-category instructor is entitled to be the Chief Flying Instructor at a flying school.
  • The C-category instructor rating is the lowest grade entitled to instruct flying to unqualified pilots, but still requires to be under the supervision of a B-cat instructor.
  • D-category instructors are allowed to confer aircraft type ratings on already qualified pilots.

The Wakatipu Aero Club offers training towards the B- and C-category instructor ratings.

Our C-category instructor training involves the following components:

  • Membership
  • 25hrs dual training 'C' Cat ground course
  • Instructional Technique Course
  • CAA Flight Test
  • CAA Issue
  • One hour spin training

Instructing for Wakatipu Aero Club involves pilots in a broad range of experiences which rely on local knowledge. Thus it is necessary to have completed this experience as our syllabus extends beyond the minimum CAA licence requirements. We are interested in candidates motivated to be instructors who not just view instructing as a means of building hours. If you have commitment, are responsible, have initiative and personality, enjoy a challenge with a huge learning curve, then you should be commencing your instructors rating with us.
